Whether you have no clue what SEO is, know a bit, or you’re a professional, we hope to make this the easiest way to simply how SEO works.
If you want to know what is SEO, we’ve written an article. But before you read this article and have fun, if you do not like puns, then exit this page. Spoiler alert.
So, how does really SEO work?
In order for your site to get indexed by the search engine by their bots:
(all gifs are from Giphy)
It needs to..
Crawl either your site or someone else’s:
- Web pages
- User-submitted content such as Google My Business and Maps user submissions,
- Book scanning,
- Public databases on the Internet,
- and many other sources.
Which one detects your site first? Who knows, maybe whoever gets up and crawls back to action?
This is why link building is important, but not the main priority.
What you do need to focus on how your site is bot friendly. If your site structure and technical SEO is causing barriers, it will take a long time for you to get “indexed”
What is crawling?
Traffic and crawling take time and resources, whether you have a brand new site or thousands of pages on your site, you do want to help navigate the bots to move freely and:
- The crawl rate limit is designed to help Google not crawl your pages too much and too fast where it hurts your server.
- Crawl demand is how much Google wants to crawl your pages. This is based on how popular your pages are and how stale the content is in the Google index.
- Crawl budget is “taking crawl rate and crawl demand together.” Google defines a crawl budget as “the number of URLs Googlebot can and wants to crawl.”
The better the crawler moves the better the data collection can begin and understand your site better by indexing your site to specific keywords:
The better they can understand your content, the better the rankings.
However, without technical SEO and quality content, you will get indexed with keywords that are irrelevant to your business, just like this gif here, which has nothing to do with what we are talking about:
The more irrelevant keywords you are ranking for, more data these bots need to take into consideration to determine exactly what keywords you should rank for. This is why site structure, creating a Wikipedia or connecting content pages together like a spider web will help define your content better and better.
The more you weave content together, the better your web forms.
Bots then don’t have to leap to get to point A to B.
Neural, spider web, and Wikipedia are examples of how everything connects and how everything has a purpose.
Once you have an idea of what content, pages, etc are needed, you can pave the road for crawlers to crawl freely and understand your site better.
Some SEO Experts will wow you with gadgets and gimmicks to lure you to some fancy techniques. But none of these work. The focus is to help crawlers understand and for you to provide the best user intent for what they are searching for so they can connect the dots.
The more dots you connect to A, the more they can understand where everything is and how and what serves to who and what purpose.
It’s the same concept of machine learning, the more data and inputs you provide, the better these algorithms can take that data and provide the best rendering possible.
These search engines are asking you to prove that you have the content that people are looking for
They will keep asking and keep defining your content. Unless you provide them the answer they are looking for
They will start from the beginning. Start from scratch, index you to whatever they think might be relevant, and start collecting data and remove irrelevant keywords, eventually. This is why some SEO takes a long time, they need to understand your content better so you can rank better. Search engines primary objective is to provide the best relevant information to their users.
Why are you better than the competition? For some who wants fast results, you can use some gimmicks and gadgets, but eventually, security will escort you off the stage.
Yes, you have to write better content, use the tools available like schema structured data, site structure, technical SEO to say no to search engines, this is what we actually meant.
Do what you can to give search engines everything on a silver platter, even your head. Excuse me, your mind.
Learning how to build with SEO in mind is how you can make your website last long and not crash
It takes a while to build your website when it comes to SEO. You need to build each purpose, and every piece needs a purpose or search engines will get confused as to why it belongs there.
Looking good for SEO is the goal. No black hat or grey hat will help you build a solid foundation.
It takes just one mistake to blow your site up for failure. The amount of time it took you to build and the instant you get penalized is not worth the money.
Before you do any SEO, or hire an SEO Expert, be very picky and understand their process of SEO. Will it hurt you in the long run? If you are clueless, then learn a bit more about the process.
